Let me try to sum this up easily for you. Do you love 80s action films, especially those set in the future? If yes then you’ll like Far Cry3: Blood Dragon. Everything about this game encompasses that entire genre and that entire feel. The aesthetic is that of a neon cyberpunk retreat, while the soundtrack is an ode to the electro soundtracks commonly found in a John Carpenter film. All interluded with fantastic, over the top cut scenes that look like they’ve been lifted from a Mega Drive game. It’s a game that defiantly doesn’t take itself too seriously.

I may as well get this out of the way now, I fucking love 80s action films. I love 80s sci-fi films too, so to play Blood Dragon is a bit of a joy for me. It starts out with an over-the-top intro tutorial sequence that involves some pretty funny moments. This is a sort of intro to the style of the game, it’s easy going and happy to make fun of itself. You can also see that the game has little to no relation to Far Cry 3 either outside of them sharing a graphics engine, it’s seems more of a marketing sceme to keep the name. You’ll play through hoards of bad guys, shooting your way through each area. It’s a standard FPS affair really.

The game is set in a fictional version of 2007 (nice touch), the world is suffering from an aftermath of a nuclear war between the US and Russia. You play the role of Rex an American Cybernetic Super Soldier as you head off to investigate the actions of Colonel Sloan. From here on out it’s a story of betrayal and revenge all set against the backdrop created.
